Meet the talented designer we call Marge!

We are SO fortunate to have some of the most talented designers on our team.  They work so hard to bring you all the beautiful Happy Planner® products that you have grown to love.  I want to introduce you to them because I just know that you're gonna love them as much as we do.

Before we get to know Kristin, let me answer a question that we get asked a lot. "What is the difference between your designers and the Design Team?"  Great question...thanks for asking.  Our staff designers are employees of me & my BIG ideas® who work with us to design and create the products we offer.  The Design Team, however, is a team of influencers that we select each year to partner with us to promote all things Happy Planner®.  I know, I can see how it gets a little confusing. That's why we are making some changes to our 2018 Design Team...stay tuned for more details.

Okay, now back to Kristin!  She is a Senior Graphic Designer who joined our team in 2010.  Her impressive illustrations, paintings and hand-lettering are just as spectacular as her graphic creations.  We call her Marge, an inside joke that just kept going.  She and her husband, Jeff, live in southern California with their two ADORABLE little girls, Scarlett, 6, and Harper, 3.  You might recognize them from some of our packaging.  I mean c'mon, how could we resist those faces?

Today, I put on my journalist hat, and sat across the desk from Kristin and asked her a bunch of random questions.  It's kind of hard to interview someone that you know.  I won't be quitting my day job anytime soon.  Here's a quick Q & A round:

Q: What is your favorite Happy Planner® that you have designed so far?

A: Sparkle & Shine

Q: Are you a functional or decorative planner?

A: Functional!

Q: Coffee or Tea?

A: Ooh, 50/50.  Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon.

Q: BIG, Classic or mini?

A: Classic

Q: Favorite Happy Planner product?

A: Value Pack Stickers

Q: Can you describe the process of product development, from concept to finished product?

A: Typically when we start a new round of Happy Planners the designers (#barbartists) will take a day to go trend shopping to get an idea of current patterns, colors, themes, etc. that are popular. After shopping, we'll all get together and discuss what we saw and any other big ideas we have for new products. Lauren will usually let us pick which planner themes we’re interested in and then each designer will put together trendsheets for each of their planners. Trendsheets consist of the general theme of the planner, colors, fonts, and photos that inspire us. Personally, I like to design dividers first and then create cover options after. After the dividers and covers are finished, I’ll start on the weekly spreads of the first month and give the planner all the special touches that are inside (quotes, little design details, etc.) and then the dashboard. After three months of the inside pages are flushed out, the planner gets passed off to production where the planner gets completed and is then digitally sent to the factory.

Q: Favorite part of your job?

A: Creating art and collaborating with the other designers.

Q: Least favorite?

A: Product approvals.

Take our word for it...they're kind of tedious!
